Course Overview
This course includes knowledge of chartwork and pilotage techniques required for coastal navigation, International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, local waters, basic ship handling, pollution prevention, and master's duties in dealing with emergency situations such as grounding, collision, and fire. This course also provides hands-on skills in the use of marine radar and electronic navigational systems for position fixing.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain symbols and abbreviations used on a nautical chart.
- Identify Canadian Aids to Navigation (buoyage system).
- Plot positions on the chart using various methods.
- Define variation and deviation, and calculate compass error.
- Draw courses and calculate distances on the chart.
- Calculate set, drift, and rate of the current.
- Determine course to steer allowing for current and leeway.
- Explain master's duties in emergencies.
- Prevent pollution.
- Use radar, GPS, and other aids to navigation.
- Maintain vessel's stability.
- Explain basic ship handling techniques and effect of rudders and propellers.
- Explain the requirement and use of life saving and fire fighting appliances.
- Explain the application of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea with Canadian Modifications.
